La ville de Bergame est touchée de plein fouet par la première vague de la pandémie du Covid-19 : on y observe une surmortalité frappante, d’autant plus inquiétante que le gouvernement italien est totalement dépassé par la situation. Accompagné de ses anciens élèves du Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia de Palerme, Stefano Savona parcourt la ville et multiplie les points de vue afin d’offrir une mosaïque des choix cornéliens qui se sont imposés à cette période, particulièrement chez les soignant·es et les personnes vulnérables. Les Murs de Bergame s’impose comme l’un des premiers films marquants à traiter de la crise du coronavirus. En explorant d’abord la violence du traumatisme avant de laisser place au processus de deuil et au partage d’expériences, Stefano Savona livre un documentaire saisissant, teinté d’une atmosphère de film d’horreur, tout en conservant une profonde humanité dans sa relation aux personnages. En attendant que la lumière soit faite sur les responsables de ce fiasco, ces images, venues de la ville martyre d’Italie, constituent à la fois un témoignage essentiel et un hommage poignant aux disparu·es.
The city of Bergame has been hard hit by the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, with a striking excess of deaths, all the more worrying because the Italian government is totally overwhelmed by the situation. Accompanied by his former students from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Palermo, Stefano Savona travels around the city, taking in a wide range of viewpoints in order to offer a mosaic of the Cornelian choices that had to be made during this period, particularly among carers and vulnerable people. Les murs de Bergame is one of the first major films to deal with the coronavirus crisis. By first exploring the violence of the trauma before giving way to the grieving process and the sharing of experiences, Stefano Savona delivers a gripping documentary, tinged with the atmosphere of a horror film, while retaining a profound humanity in his relationship with the characters. While we wait for the light to be shed on those responsible for this fiasco, these images from Italy’s martyred city are both an essential testimony and a poignant tribute to those who died.
