Dans la nuit du mercredi 16 mai 2018, une patrouille de police repère une fourgonnette dans laquelle se trouvent 30 migrant·es kurdes qui tentent de rejoindre la France. La suite on la connaît : une course-poursuite qui s’achève sur la mort tragique de Mawda Shawri, âgée de deux ans, abattue d’une balle dans la tête. Cinq ans plus tard, le réalisateur s’associe au collectif La voix des sans papiers pour une lecture en assemblée de documents liés à cette affaire qui lève le voile sur les violences policières en Belgique et les mensonges de l’institution. En contrepoint à ces hommes et ces femmes liées par une même écoute attentive, le réalisateur filme les lieux du crime et leur insoutenable tranquillité. Avec son approche à la fois empathique, poétique et militante, hold on to her atténue la violence du traumatisme et dessine les contours d’un monde où la domination ne serait plus.
On the night of Wednesday 16 May 2018, a police patrol spotted a van containing 30 Kurdish migrants trying to reach France. The rest we know it... a chase which ends with the tragic death of two-year-old Mawda Shawri, shot in the head. Five years later, in association with the collective La voix des sans papiers for a reading of documents related to this case, which lifts the veil on police violence in Belgium and the lies of the institution. In counterpoint to these men and women bound together by the same attentive listening, the director films the crime scenes and their unbearable tranquillity. With its empathetic, poetic and militant approach, hold on to her attenuates the violence of trauma and draws the contours of a world where domination would no longer be.
